Cheap Soundcard Digtal out, does it matter with great conversion?

Hey All, I own a Benchmark DA which I enter into via Optical SPIF from my cheap $20 sound card out the back of my PC. So I am wondering would it benefit me to get something like the Lynx AES PCI card if I am only looking for a sonic upgrade via the AES out rather than the cheap sound card. The Main question here…does the digital part of the chain really matter if you have a solid DA??

Hi, I notice that everytime I’ve recorded vocals in a professional studio, that there has been a high end compressor in the chain.
